Bent Distributor shaft - advice please

I have a 1020 gas tractor from the 60's. Has a 3 cylinder in it. Starter had to be replaced and I hired a "friend" to do it.. unfortunately when he was putting the bucket back on it swung loose and smashed into the distributor. The distributor shaft is now badly bent. Trying to decide whether it is worth fixing? Tractor is old with other issues too. How difficult is it to replace the distributor shaft? Cost? Really sucks. Opinions please. Thanks

The shaft is NLA from DEERE, and your only hope for a new one would be an obsolete parts place, or POSSIBLY a Prestolite shop (if any still exist.)

Probably best to look for a good used distributor.

You could even try the free "wanted" ads on this very site.

I would suggest calling McDonald Carb & Ignition near Athens, GA and see what they can do. I've been pleased with their distributor and carb rebuilds.

I found a rebuilt one for $200 from www.external_link.com I also have a $100 core charge which I suspect I will not get back if the shaft is bent? Still I don't see a cheaper option without waiting for something that "might" turn up used. Anyway, better then $600 new. Thanks for your help..... I do have a question in the install it says to put it in with the #1 cylinder at TDC. What is the easiest way to tell when that cylinder is at the top of it's stroke? Is there a mark I can actually see on the flywheel?

Thanks
Chris
