4020 fuel gauge and sender

Working on the neighbors 4020. It has been converted to twelve volt starter and alternator. Can't get the fuel gauge to do anything. Seems I read somewhere that you need to replace sending unit at the same time. Is this true? JD parts man told me pretty much the same thing but I don't know why.

I dont think your gonna get it to work, let us know if you do,the new gauge for some reson dont seem to work.get a stick.

For the 12 volt conversion you will need a:
RE53664 Gauge and a AR26434 sender,,the sender is the same one as the 24 volt uses, but I normally change it with the new gauge, they take a beating over the years sloshing around wears the pivot part out..The new gauge is a different size so some altering needs done to make it fit, I cut the stem off where the fiber optic cable would fit on a late model,it helps to make room for the hold down bracket..

I remember when I converted my older 4020 years ago the new fuel gauge recommended was the same one used in the 00 series combines. It would register when the key turned on and go to empty when shut off (which I liked). The new gauges don't seem to do that. Mike

Seema I have seen on here that someone has a negative ground guage that is the same size as the old one.

If he isn't worried about staying "original" the simplest fix is to get the sender from the late model 4020 (12v version) which uses the 33-240 ohm range (not the 0-30 of the early) and an after market "over the counter" gauge. The 33-240 is considered the universal range and gauges are cheap and easy to find that use it. 20$ gauge vs 60-70$ for the Deere one. 2" face is standard size, use a hole saw to make the hole fit, front mount the gauge (go through the hole not come from behind the panel) and there is no clearance issues at all. I have converted 2 4020s like this and it is pretty easy to do and I am very happy with it. If you want more information on it drop me an email [email protected] I have helped a lot of people who are converting from 24 to 12v on their 4020 and 4010s.
