237 picker mounting info

I need to know what the spacing is for the rear wheels on a 4020 tractor with 16.9 x 34 rears for mounting the 237 picker on it. Also is there anything else I need to know before getting ready to mount this picker to my 1969 4020tracor.

My dad used to put a New Idea on the 3020... for that, wheels needed to be all the way out. However, they had to swap the 16.9 x34 with 15.5 x 38s at the dealer. I think it was a picker clearance issue, not a rubbing the next row issue.

Was not a john deere picker, though.

Do you have a manual for the picker? I'm guessing that would offer some guidance.

The operator's manual lists the inside clearance needed between the tires. 15.5 tires were tight between 40 inch rows.

There is really no option on the row spacing 40" is about all you can do...smaller tires and "Maybe" 38"S

no manual yet , just bought this and need to get tractor ready before I take tractor to where picker is located

You can choose one of two settings, depending on where you have the rear mounts on the picker set. You will need either 74.5" or 72.5", measured inside to inside the tires. You likely will want the narrow setting. The book will explain this in detail. Mike

As Kent Petersen suggested, roll the hub out flush with the end of the axle. For a regular axle tractor you will also need the rim in its widest position to the hub. The 3 point hitch needs to be removed, I think the sway blocks need to be removed also.

The picker was previously mounted on a 4010 or 4020?

Most if not all 237's came with the "Universal mountings" which requires a remote cylinder that fit in the mounting under the tractor, it should all fit okay, but the wheels will need to be clear out for sure..I have mounted several of them including a brand new one on a 2510 back in 1976, it was a new unit that had been in storage for a while.

Yes that's what I was thinking too Kent, and I also think the universal mount was an option on the latter 227's....seems that our last 227 had one with it,,but that was 50 years ago...

I have a couple of 237's and one 227. My 227 is a very late one and has the universal mounting. It is identical to the 237's. Mike

They are here except for those of us trying to save them from the scrappers. We have an annual Antique Harvest Days show in October where we harvest with antique machinery. This has created a "mini-demand" for old harvesting machinery around here. And that is just fine. We want to preserve these machines for the younger generations. Mike

We ran a 237 on a 720D for several years and in 1971 we put it on a 1966, 4020D for one season then we went with a 300/3 row narrow for a few years pulling it with a 4630, that was a nice out fit,,then that was it for us, we feed whole shelled corn now in the feed lot,all the cribs are gone for good..
