The pro shaft on my 72 4000 started leaking pretty steady. What
king of project am I in for here, serious or not? Many thanks

We just talked about this last week, drain the oil and remove the 6 bolts off the rear and set it out, most times the seal area on #6 is worn and will need replaced, #4 and #26 are the seals and #12 is the gasket a lot of times the wavy washer #22 is broken too.

If it's leaking at the shaft it's the oring. Snap ring and shaft could be worn allowing it to work in and out.
If it's leaking around the collar it's the seal.
Either way if you have a steep bank you can set it on you can access w/o draining the oil.
