JD 2640 - won't stay running

Help: My JD 2640 will not stay running. I have replaced diesel fuel, primer pump, fuel canister filter and made sure there is plenty of fuel coming from the shut off valve on the bottom of the tank. The tractor will start just fine but after 20 seconds or so it dies out and stalls. I have fuel flowing from filter to the injector pump. What do I try next? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Is there a way for the poor farmer to check the injectors or injector pump operations?
 
You have the classic symptoms of the plastic governor damper ring in the injection pump failing.

You can disconnect the fuel return line form the pump, then remove the pressure regulating fitting it attaches to.

If the ring is disintegrating, there will be coffee grounds-like debris in the fitting.

Clean the fitting and re-install it, and the engine likely will run 'til the next bunch of debris clogs it.

The pump needs to be OH-ed soon, because soon metal parts will be rattling against each other.
 
I'll add to what Bob stated that a quick check is loosen the 2 timing window screws,pry rubber gasket loose if tractor runs then inj pump fitting is plugged as Bob stated.
 
Quick check is to take out the regulator/check-valve from the top of the pump. It's the fitting screwed in the pump that the return line hooks too. If the engine runs fine with that fitting completely out - the broken pellathane ring is your problem. When it plugs - it makes internal pressure inside the injection pump get as high as incoming fuel. When that happens - all fuel flow stops and the engine starves for fuel.
When you fix the pump - that plastic part can be eliminated forever for an extra $50 if wanted.

I marked the fitting you need to remove to test or temporarily run the tractor. Once out, fuel will spill on to the ground - but it will probably make it run well enough for a test. Or . . to get it home. Note there are two fittings screwed together. You must remove both so all there is . . is an open hole in the injection pump cover.

OK, I removed fittings, didn't see any debris to speak of so put everything back, replaced two rubber fuel line like tubes on top of block that appeared to be thin, weak, cracked with similar sized tubing and clamps. I have managed to get tractor to consistently start and run for a few seconds but it still acts like it is running out of fuel and eventually stalls out. I appreciate your knowledge and help, do you have any other thoughts on what I should try next? Is it possible for the tank shutoff valve to fail to the degree that it would only allow minimal amt's of fuel to reach the filter? The new filter canister is full of fuel and I have made sure there is no air.
 
jdemaris, thank you to both you and Tx Jim. This appears to be the problem. I removed the return line and fitting and the tractor appears to be running fine. Is it more economical to remove the pump myself and take it in to a tractor repair or to just buy a rebuilt? What do you recommend?
