I have a 1956 Model 50. The tag says LP on it but it is a gasoline model. I have heard of other models that have LP on the Tag but were converted on the assembly line to all fuel. If anybody has any insight it would be much appreciated!

We have a 1956 Model 70 "Vernon" that has LP stamped on the tag and has been converted to gas.

Take a look at the photo below and note that the support and hood color is different than the rest of the tractor.

Now it looks a little better.

Hope this helps.

More likely was converted later in life by someone not interested in messing with propane.
I have a 4020 switched to gas.

Yes it is helpful. I was thinking that it might have been converted. It has newer paint so I can't tell if the paints are different from hood to nose cone. I am just curious if there is a way to tell if they did these conversions on the farm or dealer etc... Nice pics

Put a compression gauge in there and see what readings you get.
For some reason I seem to think gas models I have test max out at 125 psi ? This in at whatever elevation Central Ohio is at.

If higher than this it just may still have the LP pistons in it.

Matt, what kind of distributor does the tractor have? If it has the right angle LP distributor it is possible it could be a conversion. Mike

That's a nice looking 50! But look on the other side of the tractor and see if the distributor has a right-angle shape to it, like on James Howell's "Vernon" in the pics. That is one sure fire way to know if a JD 2 cyl. tractor started life as an LP model.

Mr. Howell, do you know the approximate build date of your 1956 70? I noticed that the serial number is just over 39000. Thanks, Hugh

Checked the [b:654c4848f0]JOHN DEERE TRACTOR DATA BOOK[/b:654c4848f0] under the John Deere Model 70 section under [b:654c4848f0]Comments[/b:654c4848f0] on page 107.

"[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]Serial number 7003000 was the first Model 70 LPG General Purpose built August 21, 1953 and shipped to Dallas, TX.[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]".

A safe "guess" would be Sept., Oct. or Nov. of 1953.

Do know that "15" (7000014) was one of the early 70s that was built.
