70 JD Diesel oil capacity

For some reason I think the neighbor would bring a case of 12qts for me to do the 720D.

Eng.,pony motor, and air cleaner took all that and maybe a tad more ?

Make sure you get both of the engine drain plugs out. One is in the timing cover off.

[b:654c4848f0]Mike M[/b:654c4848f0] is correct.

The crankcase takes 12 quarts.

The pony motor takes 1 quart.

The air cleaner takes 2 quarts.

Be sure to drain the pony motor oil into the crankcase oil first.

Checked the OPERATOR'S MANUAL OM-R2032R JOHN DEERE TRACTOR MODEL 70 DIESEL under the [b:654c4848f0]SERVICE CRANKING ENGINE CRANKCASE[/b:654c4848f0] topic on page 73.

[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]"Loosen plug screw and pull it out as far as possible. The oil will drain into the diesel engine crankcase; therefore, the operation should be performed before draining the diesel engine oil."[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]

The photo below shows the location of the pony motor drain plug.

Sounds like somebody went and lost the operators manual. The good news is that new Operators and service manuals in print or on CD. Can be ordered from the nice folks at 1-800-522-7448.

Well, yes and no...

It has ONE drain plug and the oil filter is the other ( and DO NOT tighten that oil filter too tightly)..

Ron.

The diesel engines have a drain plug in the bottom of the timing cover. Left hand side of the engine straight up from bottom. Also one more in the center of the bottom and then also the filter cover.
The oil will flow into the timing cover upon filling but won't all drain out unless you remove the drain plug.

Checked the OPERATOR'S MANUAL OM-R2032R JOHN DEERE TRACTOR MODEL 70 DIESEL under the [b:654c4848f0]CHANGING THE ENGINE OIL AND FILTER[/b:654c4848f0] topic on page 71.

"[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]Also drain the timing gear housing by removing the plug illustrated at the top of next page.[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]"

Take a look at the photo below of the Timing Gear Housing Drain Plug.
