Seal for the PTO shaft carrier, no.26, is leaking. Question is, can I drain the oil and remove the cover and replace the seal or is it a more complicated job? If I pull the cover things are not going to fall apart inside are they?

OOh yes you need to drain the oil, pull the cover and put it in the vise to work on it..no surprises..

I know you have had a lot more of these apart then I have . But I did a 4020 and later a 4640 of my own and Both of them I pointed Down in a ditch and lost no oil . That shaft on a 4640 is a least 4 ft. long and it had to come out with the bearing quill. There were full of oil.

If you don't want to do it in a ditch could you take the from tires off and rest it on the wheel hubs? Would that give you enough of an incline to negate any oil loss? Just a thought.

Just drain the oil and then you can see what the sump screen looks like. Also replace #4 the oring and check to see what condition #1 snap ring is in. chris

You guys are thinking about changing the PTO stub O ring,, this guy is removing the rear bearing housing, you will be able to look at the differential through the opening,,,you would need to park in a very deep ditch to keep the oil in...

Drain the oil pull the pto cover off check the sump screen change the hyd oil filters and remember hyd oil does wear out and needs to be changed after so many hrs of service

Don't worry about draining the oil....just pull that rear housing. You won't need any buckets because you will never catch the flood that comes out! Then after you have mopped the floor and got clean clothes on you can go to town and get new oil.
