4055 steering

The neighbor has a 4055 MFWD that in the last day has required both hands and considerable effort to turn the wheel. The day before it was one finger with ease. I could guess on something like a 10 or 20 series row crop but I am a little lost as to a cause here. He is going to try filters and sump screen. Flow to the SCV's seems unaffected.

How are the brakes, they working ok? Oil to the SCV makes it seem like its not a pressure problem, has the pressure been checked?

Item #2 in the parts image is the inlet screen on the steering block, #10 is a screen under each 90 degree fitting, there are two.

most of the time it's in the metering pump at the base of the steering wheel, this is different from the early 4020 style,, there is a check valve that can leak past letting too much pressure into the pump, the upper thrust bearing can fail making too much drag, the steer shaft gets some upper thrust from static pressure in the metering pump, as it pushes against this failing thrust bearing the drag happens...rarely have I found a valve filter the problem...
