Gear Oil in First Reduction Area

Hello,

Correct me if I am wrong but shouldn"t there be only engine oil in the gear reduction side of the tractor on a John Deere A? Tractor was just serviced at the local school for a project and I noticed a rattle in the belt pulley clutch area (broken ear on a clutch operating bolt) so I pulled the clutch fork assembly and noticed a pinkish oil on the gear teeth. I checked the engine oil and it is engine oil but when you would stop the engine and the gear oil would start dripping off the teeth it will drain off into the engine crankcase via the one inch port.

What would cause this to happen?

Thanks,

You are correct on the engine oil in the first reduction cover on the Model A. As I recall, you have to get into the "numbered series" before the change to the same lube as used in the rear end.

The seal on the input shaft to the transmission isn't up to snuff and is allowing gear oil into the cover. Too much slop in the outside bearing on that same shaft under that small half round cup dead center on the reduction cover certainly a contributing factor as well.

You are correct, engine oil in the reduction cover itself, but it returns by being carried up to the clutch gear and squeezed off there by the large reduction gear itself on a constant basis. This leaves a quart or so of oil in the cover at all times. And it's a good idea to always put the transmission in neutral and engage the clutch when idling for extended times so that the engine oil doesn't build up in there beyond the gallon mark. At which point when you do finally drive off, all that oil tries to get thru that one inch drain hole all at once and it can't fit, so it piles up in there and wets down the clutch plates and comes on out the inside of the drum being spun off there in a fine shower of oil droplets which you will notice on your glasses right away. Or seen as speckles on the hood.

In addition to the below info.

I'd be checking the level of the gear oil too because if way overfilled or with water in it that can cause it to go where it should not.

To All for the Advice. I found that it was coming out of the A565R Plate for the PTO Drive Cross Shaft. It had the thick gasket in between and about a one inch chunk fell out and was allowing the gear oil to pour into housing.
