720 Diesel govener problems.

Went to use my brothers 720 diesel this weekend, and the thing wouldnt idle below 1000 rpm... but would wind way over rated speed. I did some adjusting on the throttle linkage and got the idle down to about 800, but now it wont start unless you bump the throttle ahead a bit. This tractor ran PERFECT on Wednesday. Beginning to think I either threw a weight in the governor or broke a spring. I have done plenty of gas tractor governors but never tore into a diesel one. Has anyone else ever dealt with this? My shop manual is inconveniently setting on the platform of the tractor in my brothers shed... in another state. Can anyone post a parts breakdown and point me in the right direction? Thanks!

NOT sure what you are doing, and can"t offer more help than to tell you you can view/download the parts catalog (in .pdf format) @ www.jdparts.com.

Sounds like it threw a weight. Had it happen while baling hay on a hill once. Take the governor bearing cover off and take a look in there. You'll know right away what happened.

Just changed the weights in my 720D. It wouldn't make power. The weights were rubbing on the internal case. About to fly off. The weights are expensive for a cast lead and metal weights system. Melted my old ones down for black powder 50 cal bullets. The problem is the lead is to soft and breaks away or hammers away from the steel pivot bracket.
