Question for the brain trust-'48 B clunk in Tranny

Ok, I"ve got a "48 B. I was shredding grass and met a mound of dirt. The shear pin didn"t shear, and I didn"t get the clutch pulled fast enough. I now have a clunk in 1, 2, 4, and reverse (right side of shifter), but not in 3,5, and 6 (left side of shifter). I"ve never been inside a transmission so I need to ask the brain trust, "Do you think I knocked a cog off a gear?" and "If I did, which gear do you think I need to replace?" I have the service manual, and by looking at that, I"m guessing that I"ve messed up the countershaft idler gear. What do you think?

I had someone suggest that it may be a bearing. I pulled the 3-bolt cover behind the flywheel, and that bearing looks OK.

The problem is in the Idler gear reduction that provides low range. The gears that work are when the sliding gear top shaft is locked to the input shaft.

I agree with ET, the problem is in the low/high idler area. What doesn't make sense is the clunk in low, low should be direct drive off the first reduction gear, high is overdrive off the idler gears. Unless B's are different from A's.

I'd start by taking the shift cover off and take a look in right side to see if anything is obvisouly damaged.

Transmission top shaft tear down is required-Pull flywheel and first reduction cover, and transmission shift cover removal. A bit of work and gaskets and then you got to buy the gear.

It does seem like a tooth off that counter shaft idler gear would act like that.
I have also heard of such accidents ripping the cast boss for the PTO bevel gear right out of the bottom of the tranny case. So inspect that close too.

It is diffrent than the A, high is direct, low uses the countershaft idler gear.$$$$$$

it is the idler gear...sold a B to a man and he did the same thing on a pond bank was running slow and governor kicked open...I had told him always to keep hog and high rpm to avoid the telegraph effect back into the transmission...required a transmission tear down to correct....while you're in put a lock shifter on 1/3/r shifter shaft....will solve another problem .....bushog weren't even thought of when old B's were made....
