john deere 1020

I have what I believe to be an early 1970ds diesel 1020.
The hydraulics have been making noises for a bit now and while blading " box scraper" the driveway it quit moving and no hydraulics. I drained the oil, some moisture " Oregon Coast" and pulled the pump.
No metal in the screen in the pump. Not wanting to just buy a Hydraulic pump "$700+" unless it is necessary.

I believe so there is a handle on the dash with a pick of a Rabbit and Turtle. I did cycle this into both settings when the problem started.

Your 1st mistake was pulling pump without sufficient hyd diagnostics being performed on the hyd system. Closed center hyd problems require diagnosis not "component changes". Have you checked sump screen(parts key 30) and changed hyd filter before pulling pump? Which pump did you pull(trans or frt pump)??

it looks as if I should have posted be for pulling pump. I will pull the screen # 30 after work and I did check the transmission filter on the bottom of the case all looked good there. I did not do anything with the trans Pump.

I am looking a the service manuals on this site there is a JD-37 & JD-S-SM2071, can you recommend witch one will be the most complete?
I do have a Parts manual that came with the tractor PC-970 on the cover.

if screen # 30 is plugged will this case the problems I am having? can I get your phone #,mine is 1-541-404-5783?

Your hi-lo is hydraulicly engaged both ways. Pressure is supplied by tran pump. If your screen is clogged enough to restrict flow enough the hi-lo won't enguage. That's the only way hydraulics could affect tractor not pulling itself. Your hi=lo unit could also be bad.
Check the screen first.

I cleaned screen # 30 and changed the oil and hydraulic filter. Reinstalled hydraulic pump.
Does the tank in front of the radiator that is tied to the pump need to be full of oil?

Front reservoir tank fills after the front pump is supplied and the oil cooler fills. When the reservoir tank fills the overflow is pipe back to the transmission.
Something probably obscure. Between the transmission sump and the check valve in the front pump supply line is stopping oil flow. The divert or the relief valve have been known to stick open if fouled with junk.
Is there oil moving with the trans top cover open and the engine running?

I took front pump off and apart nothing wrong that I could see.
I did pull the high low shift unit off and the shifter cover assembly off.Turned over tractor no oil from front pump.
High low drum not moving. pull inspection cover for clutch lots of small parts every were broke.
Blew air back threw suction side of hydraulic pump it goes into the shifter cover.
May be the clutch being out some how prevented the Hydraulic pump from getting oil

there is a very small line coming from the pressure side of the hydraulic pump to the top of the reservoir tank. larger one at same point to heat exchanger.
Why is the suction side of the Front Hydraulic pump ran threw the 2 speed / tranny cover?

As txjim stated. The front pump is a closed Center radial piston pump. It needs a pressurized supply of oil to the inlet port.
If the transmission oil system is plugged, worn, valves stuck , lines broken , seals blown etc. there will not be enough oil to supply the front pump. Transmission supply is priority over supplying the front pump. Front pump just gets the surplus left after everything else on the low pressure system.
