4430 2 speed and steering problems! Help!

I have a 4430 that is about to break me! Just had complete overhaul on engine and clutch rebuilt. Got it home and I noticed while running a bush hog I was having trouble keeping my lift up(3 point hitch). My brother ran it the next day and said steering quit. I came over today to check it out and here is whats going on. The tractor will move, brakes work, pto works, but the steering is very tight and my 2 speed has quit also. Just replaced quad range clutch pack about 2 years ago. I have changed filter and checked screen ok. Thanks for any advice!

Surely the pipe clamp(parts key 21A) on the hyd hi-low has been updated. Have you checked hyd function in both high & low? I'd suggest to check stand-by pressure just for a diagnostic starting point. Has trans pump drive shaft even been replaced???

Do the easy checks first. Make sure the linkage is connected and operating the 2 speed shift lever properly. I've had the pins fall out before.

First thing you need to do is do a clutch pressure check and see where you're at. Need at least 175 psi on a 4430. All of the test ports are -5 oring boss and you'll need a 300 psi gauge and some hose to connect everything. Once your pressure gets below about 150 psi it stops charging the main pump and you will loose brakes and steering.

The last one I worked on that had similar problems had the filter relief valve stuck open and it was bypassing oil directly back to the sump, that valve is located in the housing behind the filter.

hanks Jim! Can you tell me how to perform stand-by pressure test. I looked at shaft when we rebuilt engine and did not see any problems. Not sure about pipe clamp.

-5 boss is -05 ORB or SAE J1926-1 Straight Thread O-Ring Boss. It is a standard fluid coupling design. It is based off a 1/2-20 thread with an o-ring seal. Don't try to connect pipe thread to any of the test ports, you'll end up damaging the thread and have to repair or replace the aluminum housing.

There is a file you can download here that will help identify fluid couplings.

I don't have a picture but on the clutch regulating valve housing as it is call there are 4 pressure test ports. Starting at the top port and working clockwise there are: PTO Brake, Lube pressure, Clutch pressure and PTO Clutch pressure.

by -5 boss he means boss o ring fitting. That"s a type of thread like what you would call pipe thread, course or fine thread. The clutch valve body on the left hand side of tractor under battery box has ports. You take the plug out and install a fitting that is boss o ring thread and hook a 300 pound test gauge to the one marked clutch, rev engine up to 1800-2500 rpm and see what you are reading.

Also, if its an early model 4430, on that valve body there will be another plug/port marked lube, this measures your transmission pump pressure, which could also be a problem. Cant remember exactly what it should read but now with my new transmission pump in mine now reads 50 psi, I think it should be between 20-30 psi anyway.

Do you have a service manual? It discusses this pretty well.

I agree with MikeJM on check the easiest things 1st. Here's a parts photo of the clutch operating valve that MikeJM referred to. To check stand-by just plug a 5000# gauge into rear breakaway coupler and move control lever.

I plugged gauge into scv and got around 2100# pressure. On 1 of the 4 ports on the 2 scv's would hold that. Not sure how they are supposed to act. I loosened filter housing and turned tracor over and had lots of oil come out. i took hose loose that goes to front pump and had good oil flow also. I went to put tractor back under shed and 2 speed was working. Still no power steering.

Although dialing up stand-by pressure to 2250-2350 psi may help cycle time it won't help this tractors hyd problem. Gauge leaking off on 1 breakaway coupler indicates a poppet valve in scv isn't seating/sealing.

As txjim pointed out. If the scv is passing oil from the HP side back to the pump when no hydraulic load is in operation. That is a serious failure that can not be bandaged around .

i'm not sure about testing scv's. On right hand scv I could plug into right side port and move lever. Pressure would go up to around 2100 and hold. On left port of right side scv I could mover lever opposite direction and it would go to 2100 and then fall once lever went back to neutral position. Same way on left hand scv but pressure slowly leaked down on right port.

I just wanted to tell everyone thanks for the advice. I don't know what happened but everything has returned to normal. Stuck valve maybe? Thanks again!
