3020 gas = good?bad?

looking at a 3020 gas syncro
are these good tractors?
parts hard to come by?
would like to use it on the bale wrapper

There are some on this board who don't like the gas 20 series... and I can't offer an opinion on the gas part, as I've never owned one. You have to decide if gas is something you are comfortable with.

However, we have a diesel 3020, have had it a long time. It's a dependable horse. Not as strong as a 4020, but nimble and runs well.

The downside to a 3020 is good used blocks and crankshafts are in short supply, and re-engining one is not as easy as some other tractors, like say a 2520. Other parts- hyd, trans, clutch are very plentiful.

I have owned quite a few 3020's and have 4 right now.The gas is ok but the diesel is great.The cast iron zenith carb was much better than the white metal MS carb.I did just sell a real sharp 3020 with the MS carb to a neighbor and it runs really good.There are plenty of gas moter parts to be had and parts support for the rest is very good as many parts are shared with others(4020 and 2510)My one 3020 has 9000 hours and has not been touched yet but it does need an overhaul.We have one on a TMR mixer that feeds cattle on two farms every day.The balencer system makes them a little sluggish on the throttle than a 4020 or 2510.If you work it real hard it seems to use a little more gas than I think they should,but I am very satisfied with the fuel usage of my diesels.They are a good tractor but getting to small for many farm operations.
 
The good is that you can buy a lot of tractor for the money with the gas models.
Years ago I sought out a gas model 4020 for our loader/blading tractor. It is a fine machine.
The bad is if using a lot of hours then you will spend a lot more on fuel.
I never cared for the sounds of the 4 cyl. engine in those.I prefer the 6 cyl. But if it falls in the HP range you need a better tractor for the price would be hard to find.
Gas models tend to be less worn out overall then the diesels.
 
Good. I have mine for 20 yrs. This is a sideconsole, synchro with loader. BAD is that aluminum carb which is the biggest downfall, just scrap it.
 
I had one for a few months. I also had a 2520D that ran circles around it. Traded it on a 4030D with a loader and was much happier....
 
Had one for 3 years, and had starting problems the whole time I owned it. Tried everything I knew and every mechanic within 100 miles. Neighbor had one for 20 years and has had very little problems other than hard on fuel when used hard. If I had my choice I would find a diesel one. good luck
 
Good. Have a 65 JD 3020 gas syncro that is used almost every day on the ranch and haying business. Very nimble and right sized for a lot of duties. In over 10 yrs of use I"ve only replaced the battery, fuel pump, plugs, and fluids. Lots of power and doesn"t use a drop of oil. Does ok on fuel unless you overload it or operate at max hp but gas is cheaper than diesel for now. I use my bigger tractors for the heavy duty work but the 3020 is my favorite for all medium chores. Be sure to check out all the gears, work the hydraulics under load, look for leaks, check out the pto and pto brake, check hydraulic coupler, type of carb, listen to engine for bearing wear and balancer noises. Look for any repairs under the gas tank in front as these tractors are over 50 yrs old and the steel tanks are getting prone to leak. Replacement tanks are poly. Well maintained 3020s are great tractors but ragged out ones will be a money pit. Try to get a work and repair history if available. Good luck.
 
I don't know about the gas part but we have been very happy with our diesel. Neighbor has two diesels that are ran almost everyday for the last 30 years. Only green they have but I have seen many red ones come and go on his place
 
They are very thirsty and hard to start and keep running right. Dad has one. He switched to the "better" carb, but it is still the least favorite tractor on the farm. I would never buy one...look for a diesel and you will have something.
