855 Tach Problem

Been having a problem with the tach on my 855. Needle keeps bouncing around and not registering correctly. Had troubles locating the end of the cable opposite the tach, but with help from this board was able to find it. Lubrication of the cable did not correct the problem and I decided not to try to fix it because of the difficulty in removing the tach. Now my better judgment tells me to try and fix it before matters get worse. Can anyone advise how to get to the tach so I can remove it and install a new one? Looks to me that the fuel tank may have to be removed to get to it. Don't really see any way to get to it. Thanks in advance for any insight or suggestions.

If you aren't familiar, google up the JD parts web site and it will give you some help. AM102034 tach lists for $105.48

It's not really that big of job to get the fuel tank out, especially since the fuel pick-up tube comes out the top. I've had mine out a couple of times. BTW, when you have the tank out, clean it out really well. Putting a drain in the bottom of the tank would be a good idea too. I got into a big mess one time with fuel algae in mine. As I recall I had to take the tunnel cover and the lower left side panel, the one by the foot rest, off to get the tank out. Right now, especially not looking at the tractor, I don't remember what else had to come off or be loosened up. I'd be glad to answer questions as you proceed though.

Leon - thanks for the information. I spent the whole day yesterday working on getting the tach out. Finally succeeded, but not sure if I will ever get the new one in that I ordered from the JD dealer. Did not take out the fuel tank out. Couldn't figure out how it came out. Had to remove left side panel, tunnel cover, foot rest, and dash lifted a couple of inches. Had to work with leg of Cozy Cab braced up from mower below, as it mounted on foot rest I had to remove. Looks like the real fun begins after I get the new tach. Wish me luck.
