50 radiator core replacement

I need to replace the radiator core on my 50.
Instead of removing the steering shaft and worm
gear, can I just unbolt the shaft assembly from the
pedistal? The 4 bolts on the side. Where is a good
place to get a core? Thanks.

Another question. Do I have to remove the whole radiator or can I remove the top, then the core and leave the bottom in place.

Best way is to remove the radiator. Spray penetrating oil on them, heat bolt heads with a torch (do not melt them) to break the rust lose, turn them a little and spray penetrating oil on each one(heat them again if necessary). Turn them back and forth until they will turn out without twisting off. Clean threads with a tap carefully so it goes together freely.
I have done many this way.

Take the whole think out and do it right the 1st time...
There is nothing hard about taking the steering shaft out..

Did my John Deere 50 a couple of years ago. I personally think that it is too complicated to replace the core without being able to turn it for access. Pulling the steering shaft back so the radiator will come out easier isn't that big of a task. I think I sprayed the bolts on the bottom of the radiator and tried to get penetrant to loosen the bond. They both came out. Can't remember if I applied any heat. I bought an after market radiator and it fit fine. Some say the aftermarket ones have problems. Might have been one from A & I or Iowa Equipment near the Tipton, Iowa exit off of I-80. Had at least one bolt break off in the radiator casting. Had to drill it out and retap. I believe I took the heat sensor for the radiator shutters out too and capped the hole. Just too many problems with my radiator to do it in the tractor.
