John Deere H clutch problems

I hope someone with a lot more knowledge on these tractors can help me because I am at wits end. I disassembled the clutch because it wasn't working properly and now have a problem I can't figure out. After disassembly, cleaning and reassembly, now while engaging the clutch it forces the whole pulley out onto the shaft allowing the pulley gear to come misaligned with internal transmission gears. It has a stout snap ring to hold it in place but it seems the operating sleeve bottoms out against the inside of the pulley way before the clutch lever falls into place. While clutching tractor it snaps out fine, I just can't figure why disengaging clutch it's driving whole assembly out away from tractor.

The lined disk is fixed on the end of the camshaft. There should be no way for the pulley to slide that far out unless it's also pushing the shaft to the right. Check the camshaft left bearing.
