priming oil pump

Hi guys,
I've been hearing about priming the oil pump before intial start up after an overhaul. As I am nearing the day I can do my start up.

How do I prime the oil pump? specifically on a 1935 model D

Pack the oil pump gears with grease. Then belt it or pull it with
another tractor watching for oil pressure.

If you belt it up you can also disconnect the oil
pressure gauge so that there is not a vapor lock in
the line. Once you start seeing oil connect it back
and you should be ok. The other thing you can do is
when the oil line is disconnected take an oil can
with clean oil and squirt it down the oil pressure
port to help prime it. Worked for me.

When I did my "D", I filled the crankcase with oil to the top hole on the oil check plug. I did this before I installed the crankcase cover and the cylinder head. I turned over the engine by hand until the gauge showed pressure and continued to turn it over until I saw oil coming out between the connecting rods and cranshaft. It really didn't take very long.

At least dump oil in the pump before you install it and rotate the drive so it is well lubed. The gears cannot pump if they are not wet.

All Overkill. The pump sits below oil level so if you have it full,
& oiled the bearings @ assembly, just roll it over normally a
few times & it'll prime itself & pump fine. I DO NOT
recommend using Grease anywhere in an engine! Especially a
2-cyl which has drip-fed parts that will plug & never get lubed.
Use stp or JB oil additive for assembly line if you must. When
the tractor sits for 6 months or a yr or 5, there's no lube in lotsa
places & they do fine.
