I have this carb in my collection of "stuff" and was cleaning it up. Was wondering what the grease type fitting that is on it is for as it only goes into the throttle body?? Mr Google tells me that the carb is for A model D all fuel from serial #49774 to 109943 which relates to 1927 to the end of 1030.

I'm guessing that is where the water valve would go and someone just plugged the hole with a grease fitting. Bob

That water port idea needs an explanation for sure!! Did those early models have water injection?

OK. I just asked Mr. Google and sure enough the Model D did did have a water injection system available. a few threads on YT showed up. Thanks guys. Leon

LOL! I LAUGHED when I saw that! FUNNY how something that's not supposed to be there can cause controversy!

Seems like you are on the right track now, though, having found some info on "water injection" on the "D's" (used with distillate fuels)!

That is one reason the upper radiator tank on a D is so large! More hours of tough pulling before that large upper lake is drained enough to begin to be a cooling problem.

When burning distillate and they began to knock in a hard pull, a twist of the wrist on the water valve handle (a long wire with a looped handle back at the operator's platform, nothing fancy) would let water in & they'd quietly get back to the business of pulling! At least as quietly as a D could!

I have never seen reports on fuel usage under full rated load with water versus without but it sure takes the knock away!

Today I 'spose the water would have to be EPA approved like DEF and be sold in special containers!
