Hi, I just bought a no.5 mower at an auction sale. I didn't have any time to check it over before I bought it but it looked complete and I only paid 75 for it. But after I got it home I realized the cast part (Z971-H) that holds the cutter bar on was broken and rewelded but that didn't last long. Does anyone know where I could get a new one? Is there someone out there have a wrecking yard for implements? Or should I just try getting it rewelded?

There's a brand new Z971H at this place

I advertised my old No 5 on Craigs List for $150, one dude is coming tonight to look at it, I'm sure it will sell quickly, but if not I think I will somehow get by, Ive owned it for like 20 years, it doesn't owe me a lot, and keeping it in the barn isn't costing all that much lol

I also have one of those neat old John Deere Hydraulic Cylinders (Bloomington, Indiana Craigs List), the one with the 2 big stops on the sides, those are heavyyyyyyyy but look very classy.

Thanks for the input. I got one on order. By time I add shipping it is more than what I paid for the whole mower... :/

In comparison, back in the late 70's or early 80's I was wanting to buy a #5 to put on a tractor and leave it there. I started going to every farm sale that had a #5 listed and at that time they were going for $150-$175. I was a young farmer with a family and no money so I couldn't afford to pay that much. Finally got one with a foot lift bought for $85. Put it on my 35 A with no hydraulics and it worked fine. $150 was worth more in 1980 than it is today but the quality of the mower is the same.

By the way, I liked the foot lift when the mower was on that hand clutch tractor. I could still control the cutter bar while one hand was on the steering wheel and the other on the clutch.

Go to ebay and type in John Deere #5 sickle mowers. There are lots of parts available. One guy in South Dakota seems to be entirely into JD mowers, mainly #8 but also lots #5 parts also.
