46 A starting problems.

Last year we rebuilt a 46 A. The block had to be bored and rebuilt. The starter, generator, battery (6v system)and the wiring are all brand new. The tractor fired up on the Delco distributor at this time but was only hitting on 1 cylinder. I put a rebuilt Wilco mag on and it hits on both cylinders but will not start on its own. Sometimes while cranking it over it will back fire through the exhaust. When we pull start it fires right up after only pulling it maybe 20". Sometimes it will back fire through the exhaust when pulling it too.

..... and after pull starting it with ease it will idol really good. One thing I"ve noticed is that the tractor has a vibration to it also when driving and at an idol seems like the back wheels vibrate. This rebuild has only an 1 1/2 hrs on it. My concerns are why wont it start using the starter now since switching from a distributor to a mag an why does it back fire through the exhaust and why does it vibrate so much? HELP NEEDED. THANKS

The flywheel weight should be to the rear when left piston is top dead center and the clutch driver weight is opposite of the flywheel. Even one or two splines of will vibrate. Mag should click at top dead center or left hand impulse at the flywheel at 3 0'clock. Ron Mn

The flywheel weight they are talking about is casted into the flywheel and this weight is directly behind the casted letters LH IMPULSE. You most likely have put the flywheel on correctly if #1 cylinder is at tdc and the LH IMPULSE lines up with the timing mark on the side transmission cover at 3 o'clock. The weight of the clutch driver is 180 degrees apart from the flywheel weight.

There is a "V" stamped into the end of flywheel & crankshaft that you line up. Same with clutch driver. If you line those up like you're supposed to- forget about worrying where the weights are at because they'll be where they belong.

The clutch weight they are referring to is a counterweight cast into the clutch driver. Get the repair manual & use it before you ruin the tractor .
