I just got dads 60 finished in time for the tractor show he was wanting to go to. It felt like one of those tv shows where they only have 12 hours to go and 20 hours of work to do before the deadline! I was nervous all day saturday at the show worried that it would die in the parade, overheat, blow a gasket, etc. Everything went good though. I have a few questions.

With the new, modern style headgaskets is it still necessary to retourqe the head? If so do I do this while it is still hot or just after if has had a heat cycle?

I used one of the John Deere aftermarket temp gauges and im not sure if its working correctly or not. I puked a little fluid a couple of times after we ran it but I expected that since I filled the radiator full. After you would run it a short time and kill it the bottom hose would be very tight, the gauge would only read about 170 at the hottest it got but the water just about has to be circulating because I could feel heat at the radiator cap. We took a temp gun and shot various points of the cooling system, it would be arount 180-190 at the cast iron neck coming out of the block. I did see the metal pipe get up to 210 once but that was after we killed it. Up around the thermostat it would be around 170-180. Im guessing this is normal temps? As fast as I finished this up you end of with nightmares of leaving a rag in the water pipe or something like that.

Anyway, he was excited that he got it in time. Here are a few pics.

Here is a video of Dad competing in the barrel roll contest, he placed 3rd.

Besides the tractor show, the Emerson Purple Hull Pea Festival host the "World Championship" rotary tiller races. This is redneckery at its finest!

Yes it looks great,, one of mine has those 2 holes near the left head lamp bracket,, I"m thinking it was for a fire extinguisher??

Very Nice looking late model 60, you've done
a good job. It's very hard to do that fine
work on a machine & then use the tractor for
work.

Your 60 looks nice. I assume it is a later model 60 with the thermostat hook up. Your first question should you re-tork the head gaskets. The answer is yes you should when it is cooled down enough to do the job without burning your hands. It is a slight pain because you will have to move some of the oiler pipes on the head to get to all the nuts. While your at it you should re-check the rocker arm clearences while its hot. Kill 2 birds with one stone. Also on temperature 170 is about a good running temperature. i hope you didnt use any stop leak in the radiator. I made that mistake once see picture of my 60 radiator
