How bad is it when all u have is 5th 6th 7th and 8th forward and all reverseswork. no 1 2 3 4.Thanks for any help Doug

I would suspect C3 clutch failure..

Put a gauge in C3 test port then put shifter in a non-working gear to confirm Tim's suspicions.

What does that have to do with the question about transmission? I wouldnt give 1500 for one with bad transmission.

$1500 for a 4020 with a running engine & bad trans isn't a bad deal.

call john deere and price a rebuilt powershift transmission from them you can buy two tractors for that price.

I did not imply PS trans wasn't expensive to repair. Call a tractor salvage yard and see how much more than $1500 they'd be willing to give for a 4020 that will fire up & run?
