When driving my 730 diesel all is fine but when I pull the clutch
lever back to take it out of gear it starts knocking and when I
put it back in it stops just wondering what this could be
Thanks ronnie

Do you all ready have a taperlock , i remember a older post I"d be checking splines on booth ends of crankshaft ,flywheel and clutch driver.

It's fine to check the flywheel but I'm going to guess that your clutch driver and driven plates are very worn, allowing you to hear them clank. Engaging or disengaging the clutch does not change the balance of the engine in any way which means that you should hear the noise anytime the tractor is running if it was the flywheel.

Agreed on this as clutches can get pretty noisy . I worked on a 720 that had really loose driven plates and also the teeth on the driver were really worn along with worn bearing-bushing in the pulley . That thing made quite a bit of noise but was quiet with the clutch snapped in . Just like yours . Loose splines on either end of the crank will make noise with or without the clutch engaged . Ever hear one with a loose flywheel come to a stop with or without the clutch engaged ? Doesn't make any difference and you will know something bad is wrong . Seen real worn "T" bolts in the pulley make some noise also .

Your problem sounds like classic symptoms of a loose flywheel. The sound transfers through the crankshaft to the clutch side and is more pronounced as the clutch is engaged or disengaged. It will have a deeper sound than just the clutch plates making noise. It will be a hard knock. Speeding up and slowing down the engine will make it more pronounced as well. A clutch making noise will usually do it all the time the engine is running and moreso when the clutch is disengaged. To check the tightness of the clutch driver in a "quick and dirty" way, engage the clutch (engine off) and see if the belt pulley will rock back and forth. If so, you have that problem. It's possible you may have both that and a loose flywheel. Either way, there are dollars leaving you in the future. Mike

I meant to say the clutch will make noise all the time the engine is running IF it is the clutch driver that is loose but more when the clutch is disengaged. Clutch PLATES will only make noise when the clutch is disengaged. Sorry for the confusion. Mike

I"m having the same issues on a freshly overhauled 730 makes a knocking noise when clutch is disengaged. I took clutch apart pulled the pads and plates out of it restarted the tractor and noise went away. You guys think that"s where my problem is?? My clutch pads are wore pretty good
