unstyled B missing....i.e. running on one

donk

We are struggling with a '37 B which runs on only one cylinder. Spark is good...magneto adjustments make no difference...wiring is good...spark plug is new. Air cleaner has correct oil. Carburator appears clean.
What are we missing? thank you! donk

If the spark plug wires are not new then you really don't know if they are good are not. You can't see bad, until it's really bad. It takes a bit more punch to arc the gap when under compression and just that much extra is enough to make the wire leak at a spot you aren't looking at. Get a stick and move them around with it - if it makes a difference, get some wires. My styled B liked to do this inside the conduit, every ten years I had to re-learn this lesson again, and again.

Stuck valve another possible for a dead miss on only one. Pull the valve cover to double check. Has it been running lately?

Thank you! We did use new spark plug wire...no improvement. Had wondered about a stuck intake valve, should have checked. As we struggle...shall provide an update.
Thanx for responding.....

Try a different cap on the mag. I had one rot off on only 1 hole, inside, looked fine at first look. Tried everything until I found it by accident- pulled out a wire & the inside guts of the cap came with

We've been using Champion W 18s. Compression is very good...thus have concluded the exhaust valve is working correctly.
Guess we need to remove the carburetor so we can remove the tappet cover....to see if intake valve is stuck. (fuel is getting to the chamber, there is some build-up on the spark plug)
Thanx for taking the time....updates will appear.

Thank you GTX.....As this madness began the magneto was not performing well. Thus, we put a rebult mag on....it has good spark. It snaps a human pretty hard when that human does not work with testers more carefully.

...more to come.

Hi Bob Harvey -- we will go back and give it a second look. Mixture seems to be good on the "running cylinder"
Along the way I neglected to say we have fresh fuel...have added some sea foam.

thanx!

Thanx Mark -- We replaced the plugs....but we'll follow your suggestion.
If that does not work....gonna find another magneto....just to be certain the spark from this one is not the weak link. One writer suggested the spark should jump a longer distance than ours will provide.
Kinda frustrating.....again, thank you

what kind of compression with a compression tester are you getting? you need 50-75lbs at least. is it missing at idle and under a load? sometimes two lungers with a single barrel carb miss a little anyways at idle...but under a load then clear right up. seems like flywheel side is the strong cylinder and clutch side is the weak one...therefore the flywheel cylinder carries the tractor at idle.

Hi JDProblems----about five minutes after my last note...it dawned on me the intake valve could not be stuck....as you said....there would not be any compression.
Our failure is on the flywheel side. As you may have seen in the other notes....we have checked wiring...plugs...on and on.
I just found a comparable magneto....but won't have access to the tractor until Monday. The current mag does have spark...but maybe it is not strong enough. Shall return Monday evening with an update on this struggle.
thanx for taking the time.
