John Deere R hitting on one cylinder

Howdy all,

Gonna have to pull the R into the shop later this
summer to address an issue that popped up while
moving hay wagons earlier. The tractor started
hitting on one cylinder, blowing a good bit of
bluish white smoke and smelled heavily of unburnt
fuel. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts
before I tear into her. I have a couple ideas but
like to get other input when it could be a big
project. Thanks in advance and God bless!

Pull the valve cover , check the valve clearance and look for anything unusual like broken rocker arms ? pull the injectors and get them tested. Try and get a compression tester hooked up to it.
Might try and look for a cracked and leaky injector line before taking them off.

Thanks Mike,

Wanted some ideas before taking too many things apart. I"ve worked on tractors, taking too much apart when it was simple. Nothing more frustrating. Thanks again!

Whatever you do, don't try to clean the injector tips with a wire brush. They will be junk after that. I bought a set from a salvage yard onetime and the guy came back out with them all shined up saying her had cleaned them. Injector shop asked who the heck did that to them-trashed em.

I had to have a camshaft rebuilt on a 730 when I worked at Deere dealer. The timing of the injector was fine but by carefully observing you could see the injector stopped moving due to cam lobe being worn. This was after someone else had pulled the injection system off and had it gone through at a diesel repair shop. Just something else to look for.
