Have found that threads in head for manifold bolts have been ruined by previous restoration efforts. Should I drill out and helicoil and not worry about metal shavings in the water passages of the head. MdMaster Carr has manifold studs available but only up to 1/2 inch so if I drill and tap for helicoil I will be 9/16th minimum. Suggestions very welcome with more questions to come on my new project

U can make your own threaded inserts if u have access to a lathe. Get some grade 8 bolts whatever size U need. Cut the threads off and drill and tap them the size of the head studs. Drill and tap the holes the size of your inserts. Install them using thread locker.

NO. The threads are oversized . Jd used studs with oversized threads to cause a seal. If you buy the correct studs & use good pipe thread sealant on them it will be fine. IF the head threads are actually damaged. Inserts would be fine I'm sure. Just an FYI on the thread size.
