A model oil pump woes

Went to change oil before I started my "52 A for the first time, and found the oil filter stud was apparently stripped by the previous owner.
I can"t get the stud to unscrew from the pump, it just spins. Can I get the oil pump out with the stud still attached?

After posting I did more reading and now I'm confused even more!! Does the stud screw into the pump or is it screwed into the filter housing??

Thanks!!

The oil filter stud goes into the oil filter housing (cast iron) which is bolted on top of the oil filter ( metal ) can. Good chance the cast housing is broken and the can may be crushed some.
Very common problem as too many over tighten that filter cap nut trying to stop a leak because they did not install a new rubber packing. Pretty hard to get at that housing to replace it too. Small hands, little wrenches and a lot of patience you may be able to coax it out from the top engine acess opening.

The stud that holds the oil filter in place with the cap & big nut does NOT screw into the oil pump.

The upper end of it screws into the "head assembly" for a better term. It is inside the crank case on top of the steel canister that is the housing for the oil filter. I've replaced two. Neither was fun. Mike is correct. It can be done from above. Being left handed is a plus. It will take a lot of patience and you'll wish you had arms like a garter snake before you're done!

In both instances the ones I replaced were because someone not familiar with the tractors saw that big nut & thought big nut needs big wrench, lean on big wrench big time and suddenly pop. Uh oh!

The oil pressure is so low in these machines they're easy to get to seal. Many times even if the square cross sectioned O ring is 40 years old & hard as a rock little more than a twist of the wrist is good enough!

Been many years since my last one but if I recall correctly the oil lines attach to the head assembly for distribution & it is also the pressure regulator. The oil pump is a snap to remove and repair compared to this guy.

Maybe that helps?

Thanks for the replies guys. Got the %#@*%# thing off, and you guys were right, it is a bugger!! And I don't imagine going back is gonna be any easier!! A quarter size plug around the stud had pulled out of the casting. Guess I'm part hunting again!! One a positive note the crankcase is really clean, just a very thin film of sludge on the bottom. And I think I'll plastigauge the rod bearings while I'm this close.

I should have the filter head available for sale. I sold one today for a '39 B. Give me a call or email. Phone 573 535 8952. Thanks , Tom
