4020 ring gear

Can the ring gear spin on the fly wheel if the tractor is hot? The tractor had been on a corn dryer for an hour and ten minutes. We shut down and had lunch. When we tried to start again the ring gear would spin. We let cool for another hour and it worked fine. I"m looking for your thoughts.

I've never heard of the flywheel ring gear slipping and then holding either but I bet a tractor split is in it's horizon

Anything could happen. Like the time I had a starter armature shaft spin inside the armature. Drive could be slipping too. Mark the ring gear to the flywheel to make sure it is whats spinning.

More likely starter drive clutch slipping.
If so replave with posi-torque drive.

One would think that in a running situation, both the flywheel and ring gear heat up and expansion of the ring gear would not be an issue.

Same happened to me a few yrs back. It was the starter drive
