4020 sun shade

Getting older and need some shade on the 4020 for hay season, something economical, but more durable than those flimsy umbrella shades sold at local farm stores. Any ideas? Would really like something along the lines of a fiberglass canopy but something that looks half way decent so folks don"t run off the road laughing (like some of the shades I"ve rigged up in the past).

I've got one of those "flimsy" umbrellas on a tractor, and I can't come down the road in high gear, or I think it would rip right off!

I put an OEM roll-guard on my 2520. Then I found a hard wood 1x6, and made a frame out of it. The side pieces bolt to the threaded holes of the roll guard. They're probably 4-5' long. Maybe 5" high at the rear, tapered down to 2" at the front. Then I ripped several cross pieces, and screwed them down to the side frames. I gave them a little peak in the middle.

We bought some yellow "duck" cloth at the fabric store, and the wife fashioned it into a cover.(Fitted and reinforced corners) She put some loops in it to give me a place to tie it on. Works great. It's quiet and cool. The cloth can be on or off in less than 5 minutes. I used to take the wood frame off, but leave it on all the time now.

You can buy the rollbar type with the roof that came as an option on 4020 tractors. There aftermarket, but look original.A lot of consignment auctions sell them.

The factory Roll-Quard would be best and with a little work can be made quieter .They usually bring $12/1500 if factory and new after markets are $1200+.The good thing besides being cool they might save your life.Anything not factory looks out of place.I have seen them with plastic and wood tops and even if they keep you cool they look a bit odd.

We have a 3 bow fender mount umbrella on ours. Says John Deere Sunshade on it. Granted it vibrates some (duh its mounted to the fenders that also move slightly) it is much better than a canopy as it comes off easy so you don't freeze your a** off when its cools down some. Granted I like the looks of the roll guard canopy they are so high in back that when the sun is behind you there is little shade, the umbrella is much lower to prevent that problem.

Use cab upholstery under the top. Looks better and lasts longer than the open foam that is stock.

I'm with Mitch on this one. I have the 3 bow buggy top on my 4010 and 2510. They have stood up to some pretty nasty winds. I have the older style that uses the fender bolts already there. Most you have to drill holes in the fenders now. I wouldn't bother with the umbrella style either. They fold up for low clearance or can be taken off easily.

(quoted from post at 05:58:34 06/15/14) What do you do to make them quieter? I love the one on my tractor, but man is it noisey.

Assuming you have no broken spot welds that are buzzing, the number one thing that I do is lift the rops off the axle and cut a rectangle piece of rubber from a semi truck midflap and slide in-between the axle and rops and bolt it back down. You will be amazed. Finally you can glue in the headliner upholstry on the underside. Together it makes a world of difference.
