There is nothing complex about it once the final
drives are off. Much simpler than brakes on a car
- but the parts are much bigger. Once in there -
I'd replace the packings on the brake piston too.
Also check end-play on the final-drive axles and
make sure the lock-plate on the hold-down bolt is
in good shape.

Those brakes tend to work pretty well even when
all the brake facing is worn off. If you have a
brake that's not working -I'm wondering just how
worn it is?

When I step on the left brake very hard I can feel it chatter like metal to metal. Right doesn't do it but I know that I will be replacing both.

I meant that I would be replacing both the brake disc and brake plate on both sides.

Chattering doesn't necessarily mean bad brakes. Also bad brakes still work.
Trash in screen and graphite type material indicate facing failure.
You will need both disk and pressure plate when replacing but I would wait til inspecting.

The brakes still work now but the left side sounds like metal to metal contact if I step on it very hard. The screen filter has had black brake material in it the two times that I have drained the system and the fluid now has a bit of a silvery sheen to it. I have no doubt that the brakes are bad. I will try to get it changed this summer before is get too much worse and tears up more parts.
