Yearssssssssss ago when I was a used tractor dealer and ran across a ton of pony motor start diesels PRETTY WELL ALLLLLLLLL OF THEM SMOKED lol Being started and then ran only a short period never really getting hot was tough on rings and carbon and deposits.

Make sure the crankcase oil isn't diluted with gasoline or coolant. Run straight 30,40 or 50 wt oil depending on the temperature.
The smoke isn't all bad, it keeps the skeeters away.
