Transmission problem in 1950 B

I have a 1950 B (serial number 258894). I use this tractor on my hobby farm. Today, while baling hay, and going down a moderate hill in 3rd gear, the tractor started freewheeling, as if it were suddenly in neutral, although the shift lever was in 3rd gear. The PTO continued working, but it's as if the tranny is no longer connected to the final drive. Now the shift lever will go into the 3rd, 5th and 6th gealr slots, but nothing happens when the clutch is engaged. Also, I cannot get the shifter to move over to the side of the quadrant where 1st, 2nd, 4th and reverse are. So the tractor will not move under it's own power at all. It rolls freely. I have no experience with transmissions but do consider myself a pretty good shade tree mechanic. I have not yet taken off the transmission cover. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be, and how difficult it may be to fix? I need this tractor back in service!

You tractor slipped out out of high range. When the
lever is moved across ed the bottom of the shift
quadrant it goes from low to high range. You can
unbolt and lift the transmission cover up and slide
the range sifter back into gear. Make sure the shift
leaver is in the right slot. The top shaft bearings
are getting worn in your tractor.

ET - Thanks. I will get started taking off the transmission cover. I may need help understanding which shifter is which!

Do you think I can get through the summer haying season without replacing the top shaft bearings? I don't really have the time to get heavy into this until winter, frankly. Or, now that this has happened once, is it highly likely to happen easily again? Would the fact that I was driving down hill, with a baler and partially-loaded wagon behind me, have contributed to this problem?

ET - I have an IT shop manual, and so have taken the top cover off the transmission. I've tried to attach a picture of it, just as it looks now. I have not moved any of the shifters. Please advise how each shifter should be moved to get me going again. Thanks!

That is good to know about top shaft bearings, I have a 50 that is doing the same thing. It jumps out on the low range side. The shift lever stays in the slot. If I shift to reverse it will go again for awhile.

It is the shifter closest to the front of the tractor. It won't hurt to run it once everything is back in place. I would carry some wrenches along when you use the tractor because you may get good at resetting the shifters. I have a 48 B that did the same thing years ago. On corners when the pto created extra vibrations it would come out of gear.

If you were in 3rd move it to the right. Put all the shift rail in neutral. That front fork wants to be moved to the side that the tip of the lever is in.

ET - Thanks for your help! I got the shifter moved correctly, and put it all back together tonight. I started it up and all the gears worked fine. I hope I can get through the summer season without this happening again. Do you have suggestion on how to prevent it until I can replace some bearings?
