Flywheel bolts on 630

So i have done some searching. My next job is to replace the ring gear on my 630. Reading a lot of horror stories about loose flywheels, broken ears on flywheels, etc. Sounds like you should not reuse the flywheel bolts. So I can go to TSC and get 3/4" x 5" square head bolts in Grade 5 or 8. Not sure which. ....and torque it down to 275 ft-lbs and be done? Btw, Is there a good trick to marking where the flywheel is on the crank so that I get it back exactly where it was?

thanks again,
phil

If the flywheel has always stayed tight I wouldn't be to worried about reusing the origonal flywheel bolts. Clean them up good and be a little fussy when you put it back together. Retorque the bolts after it has run a while. If you are going to get new bolts I would go with grade 8 fine thread bolts and use a hardend washer under the nut. A square head isn't neccesary.

The square head keeps the bolt from turning when you tighten or loosen it. And when you install the flywheel you need to use a Dial Indicator to get it located correctly- the position on the crank determines Crankshaft Endplay, which is rather important, & needs to be 0.005"-0.010".

Yeah I should have said the square head isn't neccesary but you may need a wrench to keep the bolt from turning.

...and you move the crank shaft back and forth by engaging and disengaging the clutch?

Do not do that at least until the flywheel is back on and end
play close to right. I'd block the crank all the way to the
left.while you work on the flywheel. A block from the tire to
the center crank bolt inside the clutch. This will prevent the
fiber thrust washer from falling out of position and maybe
breaking. IIRC the 630 has one of these on the crank. A
quick peek in the parts book can confirm or deny.

There should be a "V" on the crank and a matching one on the flywheel. They can be a little faint after all these years.
