John Deere R spark plugs for pony motor

I have AC 86 plugs in the pony that look like they are original - what do they update to? I can prob order champions at work but not impressed with them in old deeres
I bought spiral core wire for the plug leads- only thing the shop had- as good or better than solid core?

Ken, those plugs are still available, althought the C86 seems a bit cold for a pony motor. If I remember correctly, we ran C87's in our R... and they were the same plugs that I ran in my 48 model A. Dad used to run C88's in the 46 A we had because it was harder on plugs. All of them will interchange, just different heat ranges. Everyone on here seems to favor Autolite plugs for the 2 cylinder tractors, but I have always used AC's and had great luck. I just bought a set of C86's and C87's a couple weeks ago at O'Reillys. Hope this helps!
 
Ken, if I'm not mistaken, unlike the 70 and 720 etc V 4 Pony Motor that use a battery powered coil distributor ignition, Ima thinkin the R pony uses a Magneto Ignition IN WHICH CASE I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NON RESISTOR SPARK PLUGS.

Maybe some R experts can help me out here.

Get those wires OFF there! You have a magneto so you MUST use solid core wires, modern wires destroy the magneto! You also would have weak spark. That pony originally had D16 plugs in champion brand, but D 18 is better for keeping clean, myself I like AC or Autolite. C88 ac's or Autolite 3116's
 
I haven"t installed the wires - solid wire ones are still in good condition - so I will not change them for now
when I finally got the pony running it ran for maybe 30 seconds good and then it started popping and farting - the #1 cylinder -wasn"t sparking hardly at all - the magneto is delivering excellent spark at the points - will try new plugs - fuel supply seems good -not sure about that air valve ---
