John Deere 4240

A few weeks ago I posted a thread about John Deere 3020 vs 4020. I got many responses and several of these had to do with possibly looking at the newer 30 and 40 series tractors. I seem to see more John Deere 4240's for sale than others. Most used prices range from $12,000 to $17,000 and slightly higher than what I am seeing on the John Deere 4020's. The show quality 4240's are in the $25,000 range and I can't spend that. I'm looking to be able to run a modern discbine and maybe even a larger 20 ft disk eventually. My question is do the 4240's have a good reputation or should I look at another 40 series tractor or 30 series tractor ($15,000 is as high as I would like to spend and around 100 hp is what I'm also looking for.)

I"m not for sure where Jim is area wise but a good 4440 around my area, West TN, would run more like 15-18k. I would think you would save some money with a 4230(100hp) or 4430(125hp). I would go with the 4430 as a good one could be had for around 12-14k here. A stock 4230 would be a stretch depending on soils for pulling a 20" disc.

We traded our 71 4020 powershift on a 1980 4240 with powershift in 1981..I would take the 4240 hands down over the 4020.,,the 4240 has the extra power needed where the 4020 lacked..and as far as durability the 4240 withstood a lot of abuse on a poor maintainance schedule..no looking back..good luck..

A 4240 is probably one of the more under-valued tractors out there right now.

We bought one in 1990 with about 4000 hours- it now has 15000. Engine was rebuilt at 12000+- we had an employee who went on to JD tech, and he rebuilt her as a project. When he rebuilt it, we installed a 4440 head and turbo. This woke her up a little, but we left on a rotary pump at the traditional setting.

The naturally aspirated 466 is a very durable engine. It will take some fuel, but they are very dependable. Transmissions are also very durable. They are not built as heavy in the rear as a 44 series (4440, 4450), but are still a very good machine. I believe the rear end is the same, or very close, to that used in the 4430.

Best of luck.
