John Deere H Hood

Just purchased a 1945 JD model H for my 10 year old twin grandson"s to restore. They are excited. We are removing the hood, but this seems like a major operation. Looks like it is necessary to remove the steering shaft. If so, how is the removal accomplished? Or am I wrong? Any help is appreciated.

(quoted from post at 14:46:12 04/18/14) Take the FRONT GRILLS of and there is a BEARING cap to remove and the SHAFT will screw forward after removing STEERING WHEEL and key.

Got it. Thanks. My grandson wants to come over tonight and start working!

I'm not sure if Pat Browning's "H" Restoration Book is still available or not, but it is the most detailed source I've found on restoring an "H". Pat died a few years ago and I believe his son has kept his book available. Google his name and it should come up with a site.

I recently tracked down Browning's "John Deere Model H Restoration Guide, Third Ed.", and is available from Charles Lindstrom. Phone/Fax (816) 232-5868. The entire second chapter addresses your question in detail. Excellent resource.
