JD40 Touch-O-Matic Oil

The manual says used 10w oil. Assuming this to be a non-detergent oil, and given the fact that the Touch-O-Matic should not be dirty, not sure what detergent would do. But this brings the question of 10w MOTOR OIL or 10w/ISO 32 HYDRAULIC oil. I would assume since it is a hydraulic system, that the latter would be preferred. Anthony.

For years, I have used NAPA general Purpose Hydraulic Oil, and TSC ISO32 in my 40s.

I agree with not using detergent oil, but these things are not Saturn rockets.

It's a 60 year old machine. Of course everything inside is going to be dirty. Layers of old oil film and sludge are inevitable. What detergents do is wash this stuff off enough to allow leaks both inside and out.

Unless you have rebuilt it you would be better off using 20wt or even 30wt Non Detergent oil in your TOM and engine. GL1 140wt gear oil in your steering box, tranny and final drives.

I agree with M Man on the oil recommendations. The detergent oil in the hydraulic system will foam with the slightest bit of moisture. In the engine, the oil gets hot enough to boil the water out, but not so in the hydraulic system. Some non foaming hydraulic oils will work, but the ten to be on the thin side and if the system or pump os worn they may cause leaks of loss of pressure. I use 30wt year round here in New Hampshire and I use my two machines to plow snow.

Well, 30wt non-detergent motor oil is available where I live. So is 10wt/ISO32 hydraulic oil and GL-5 85w-140 gear oil. Everything else is not available in stock at NAPA, AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, O'Rieleys, KOI auto parts, Wall-Mart, and Tractor Supply. I've checked. So the question is:

What is better for the Touch-o-Matic? 30wt non-detergent motor oil or 10wt/ISO32 hydraulic oil?

What is better for the trans/diff/final drives/steering gearbox 85-w140 GL5 oil or, well, just leaving the whatever sledge is in there? There is no GL4 available locally.

I use regular 10w30 motor oil in the crankcase.
