Groove in H piston

Was there a good reason for the extra "ring" groove in the head end of the piston other than to fill with carbon?
Would it be a bad idea to try to find a narrow ring to use in that groove?

why do you think they put an extra groove? there must have been a reason , why go through the extra cost/effort to have an extra groove. Bill

It is my understanding that the groove was designed to fill with carbon and then to act like a heat sink for the rest of the piston. There is information somewhere in the old service bulletins about that. Mike
