Just bought a 49 MT today (have manuals coming). I want to put a rototiller on the back of it, The man I bought it from gave me a plate where the top link pins into. This plate goes in place of the belt pulley. When I take off the four bolts that hold the pulley on should I expect oil to come out? And where do I check oil for the three point or rockshaft I guess it would be? And where do I add oil? I am hoping that it is low because it barely moves when I pull the lever. Any pictures would be great. Thanks for any help, Mark.

The MT hydraulic oil check is a petcock, like a radiator drain, under the seat on the back. You add oil by removing breather cap under the seat

When you remove the four bolts to remove the pulley, there should be no oil coming out.

All three of our 1951 MTs have the plate installed for the top link.

The oil level cock is just below the back of the seat.

Add 10W oil at either the filler cap or breather which are located under the seat cushion.

The Touch-O-Matic holds about 5 quarts when full.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.

I'm getting at that age that photos help remind me how to do things.

Just got to remember to put them in the correct sequence.

You will find that without live PTO using a rototiller will be difficult unless you have very loose, light soil.

Make sure your clutch is in good adjustment.

In my opinion a rototiller is the one implement that works just as well, if not better, with a non-live PTO. You never want the tiller running when you're not moving since it will dig a hole so having its drive tied to the transmission clutch makes sense. I've operated tillers both ways - a "non-live PTO driven" one on my Deere M and a "live PTO driven" one on my garden tractor and personally feel the non-live is easier.

If your Touch-O-Matic arms are slow to go up your pump may need a rebuild. Make sure you use non-detergent (non-fomaing) oil in the TOM. Also, if your pump needs a rebuid it could be leaking oil from your TOM system back into the crankcase. Keep an eye on your oil level in the engine and use the same oil you have in the engine. I agree with James on the oil weight. The manual calls for straight 10 or 20 wt. Depening on the season I drain both my TOM and engine and refill using the same type of oil. Tractor Supply sells both.
