JD 2020 gas burner dies

I have a 1968 John Deere 2020 gas burner. The thing starts up just like it should runs for a while sometimes a few seconds sometimes I can use it to mow. Then it will just die like you turned the key off. It will start right back up just like normal then the same thing up and dies. Wires are in good shape, changed points and condenser, swithched over to Petronix ignition today same thing. Changed ignition switch. running out of time and patience. Any ideas?? I have been wondering about the fuel shut off selonid..

If your fuel shutoff clicks,(you can hear it if you stand by it when you turn the switch on)it is usually OK.It could be the neutral safety switch if it was not starting, but you can by-pass that to check it,check for a good connection on your fuel shutoff,it may be losing contact and shutting the fuel off.

Does it have the electric solenoid in the carb bowl? (There's a wire that goes to the bottom of the carb). It's an electric fuel shut of to keep the engine from dieseling when shut off hot. They go bad and sometimes loose electric.

I don't know anything about a neutral safety swithch

Is there a way to bypass the fuel shut off selonid? Nearly $300 at JD. I don't want to buy that and not be the problem. Not returnable I'm sure.

As far as the fuel filter goes it's getting plenty of fuel. It dies like you shut the key off not like it's running out of gas.

Haven't changed the coil yet. I thought a coil would get hot first. This thing does this from initial start up. Is there a difference between a 4 cyl coil and a V8 coil.

Thanks for the help

I would check the fuel filter idea first "just so you know" if that's good try this, when it dies, pull the coil wire from the dist and hold it close to ground and crank the engine. If it jumps a good spark consistently I would lean towards fuel problems. If your worried about getting shocked get someone else to hold the wire.

It is probably the fuel shut off selonoid. You can check it by putting the spring on the other side of the needle plunger. If it's bad you can replace it with a manually adjusted metering valve from Deere parts. Part number is AT23015. The last one I bought was around $35.00. That was several years back.

It turns out it's a $300 20 amp circuit breaker. Not really it was a $5 circuit breaker. I is right next to the ignition switch in the battery box. Oh well at least it runs now.
