Model 60 starter removal question

Helping a friend diagnose a "no start" condition on his M-60.. We have all the bolts loose at the starter and the long rod disconnected, but it wont wiggle out.. Do we need to remove the flywheel to disconnect the linkage?? I figured it would just roll out?? Whats the next step?

You have the rod disconnected at the bottom, the wire at the bottom behind the flywheel and three bolts ,sometimes those starter are tight to slide out.

I"ve had the starter out of both my 70s but havnt had the starter out of the 60 yet. If I remember right with the 70 I disconnected the rod that engages the starter, remove three starter bolts and the wire and the thing comes out, probably weighs 80lbs! This is what I found in the service manual for the 60

Sounds like you still have the cable hooked up ?

That model has a copper strap hooked to the switch that goes up by the push rod this is where the cable hooks up. Also when going back together it is really critical to watch for clearance from that rod to the cable end as they bend easy and if in the wrong spot will touch and make a direct short !

Really no need to remove the flywheel to do this.

Sounds like its just stuck. WORD OF CAUTION, THOSE STARTERS ARE HEAVY AND IF YOU HAVE YOUR FINGERS IN THE WRONG PLACE YOU WILL HAVE SOME MASHED FINGERS .

When I do a 60 or 70 starter I built a cradle for a floor jack its safer and at 80 years old i cannot lift that starter up. Russ
