2510-4020 Front Weights

I have set of front weights (starters and a couple of slabs). One of the starters, I think it’s the one with the casting # on it has a hole in the casting about an inch in diameter. It would be right under the side screen once mounted on the tractor. What is this for and what side of the tractor should this be mounted on, or does it not matter?

There are right and left hand front weights. The hole in starter weight question has been asked several times and I am not sure of the correct answer. Some say those weights were made later and I was told it had something to do with front mounted cultivator but I questioned why you would need front weights.

Some JD "quick-tach" front mounted cultivators used big tapered pins that bolted to the tractors for quick alignment of the cultivator frames to the bolt holes in the tractor frames. They worked well. The hole in the side weights is there so farmers didn't have to remove the tapered pins to install the weights.

So, did I pick up a ‘mixed set” of starters (one side with a hole and one side without)? Or if the quik tach cultivator theory is good, what is the correct side of the tractor to put the hole on?

Right and left sides are the same. Thats why they have two holes in the front. You just flip them over. I have piles of those weights and have never seen any with that large hole. I agree that they might have been for the cultivator pin but also would allow them to break easier. Wondering if they might have been after-market?

would just like to put in my opinions. first off yes, there was two different kinds of front cast side weights for these tractors. the earlier ones had no holes, the later side console models had a hole in them like you described. I have several sets of each on tractors. I also have some of each that have been broke, but the ones with the hole in them break by the hole.
finally they are interchangeable because they fit from side to side. what you have is a mixed match set. an ad on this web site will probably get you a correct one if someone else has a mixed match set. The side weights WITH the holes are harder to find. regardless of holes or no holes, they look awesome on the tractor. Hope this info helps.

There is no corresponding hole in the tractor frame for the tapered cultivator alignment pins.

The pins would be further to the rear for aligning the cultivator.

The starter weights slide over the front studs and onto a loosley installed bolt at the rear, so the tapered pins would be in the way.

I have no idea what the holes are for. Possibly th align mold parts when cast?
