3010 pto grinding noise

Last summer while square baling the pto started making a grinding noise I found the four bolts that hold the shaft in was loose tightened them up and all was good. Yesterday I put the post hole digger on once it starts digging hard the pto starts grinding I found the bolts loose again tightened them up and that helped but still grinds under heavy load. Any suggestions? Hoping it"s something rather simple and inexpensive by the way this is a very early 3010

While the stub shaft was loose it was working on the shift pin for the speed shift collar, bending the pin a bit,, you can buy some time by removing the stub shaft and sticking a penny on the stub (with sticky grease) and reinstall the stub, what this does is pushes the shift shaft forward a bit more to engage the shift collar,, but you will need to split it soon to replace the shift pin,, I make a way of locking it into 540 position for good and forget about that darn pin...

Pin in question is parts key #27 located right behind mid pto shaft. To convert to 540 only one needs to remove 1000 rpm drive gear(parts key #33)

Even after replacing the pin you will probably still have the same problem of loosening bolts. Your dowel pins are worn, pto stub holes worn, and probably threads worn. I have welded the pins to the stub if not very loose but replacing the stub is safer. I have also had to replace the shaft going thru the trans because of holes worn and bolt holes worn.
The dowels hold the stub while the bolts only hold it on.
