when I turn power on to start my 730 for the pony motor I wasn't getting any spark and noticed the magneto was getting hot and I was wondering what caused this to happen

thanks ron

It's a DISTRIBUTOR.

My GUESS would be that the coils are burnt out from the switch being left on a time or two.

Darn good guess Bob, when I was a used tractor dealer back in the day I ran across a bunch of those at auctions where the ignition was left on frying the coils..........The points also got burned which may be another part of his problem.

The one on my 720 gave me fits a couple of years ago, just didn't want to start. I ordered a complete replacement distributor. Wouldn't you know it....as soon as I had a replacement coming, the darn thing started, and I haven't had any trouble since.

Lets see if i can answer your question. First I need to clarify, by "magneto" you mean the two black round coils with spark plug wires for the pony motor? they are the ignition coils, if they are warm they are conducting voltage from your ignition switch to your points(mechanical switch to ground). Easy test, connect a test light with the clamp on the test light grounded and the probe touching the wire on the points, with the ignition switch on, crank the pony. If the test light flashes consistently on each set of points the primary side of your ignition systems are working. You must have clean dry points in order for it to be consistent. If you have left the ignition switch on for an extended time with out the engine running and the points happen to be closed the coils will heat and burn open.
