john deere 70 loud engine noise

Got a 70 gas and it has a terrible loud squeel and grinding noise which sounds like it's on clutch side. Took clutch off and housing. Looks ok in there. Started it without clutch and same loud noise. It is not a hammer sound it is just a grind squeel sound. Seems to lug engine and loosen up. Crank has very little end play and a little play up and down. Can a bad main bearing cause that much noise. Absolutely sounds great when turning it over by hand or with starter. No noise what so ever. But once it starts look out. Help please

You won't always feel looseness with a bad bearing. sometimes they spin, gall up a bit, and stay tight.

Grandad,
With no clutch in the tractor you've eliminated all of the possible transmission noises. It's either in the PTO driveline somewhere or the engine itself. It's possible the hydraulic pump drive or the pump itself I suppose. Can't remember if you can disconnect the pump like A's and 60's but if you can try that. Otherwise I guess you'll have to pull the crankcase cover and take a look at the rod bearings. They usually rumble or pound when they fail rather than squeal but I guess it could. Good Luck! John

I have the reduction housing off. What is all involved in checking that main bearing on that side. Can I just pull that cast housing off and check the bearing. Also whats the easiest way to pull that inside gear off the crank?? Thanks in advance

Pull the crankcase cover off and look for a broken oil line to the main bearing behind the clutch. Look for any broken oil lines in there.

granddad...check the rod bearings first. Much easier than checking the mains. I assume this a gas model? You can check the rod bearings through the top crankcase cover. If your has a center main bearing, you need to pull that out with the crankshaft. If the engine runs ok cold at idle and starts to labor as it warms up...bearings.

Yup, I make a motion to disengage the hydraulic pump and live PTO if it is so equipped and fire it back up to see what happens.
