Which way does the U joint on the gear box shaft thread? It will not move either way.

Picture it getting tighter as it is working,, I'm leaning to left hand thread,,but not real sure..

We have. The drive wheels turn the shaft clockwise. It should be normal left hand threads but will NOT move either way

I remember having trouble with them, but I can't remeber how I got them loose,, is there a set screw hidden there some where?? It's been a while since I have dealt with one...

No set screw. Heated, beat, soaked. just wanted to make sure i was going the right way. Started second guessing

I just this this on my 640 JD rake and the thread was righthand. It was a bugger to get loose. I locked the bar disc with a bar so the gear box couldn"t turn and put a piece of square tubing over the driveshaft and had to literally jump on it to break it loose, then it unscrewed right off. I did the same for installation.

ooh yes, they get very tight, and it is possible to twist them off....Darn it,, and I"m like every one else,, I get to doubting on which way to try and unscrew them...

For threaded shafts...
The driven section (part/piece) must turn "faster" than the driver to unscrew. In other words, in the same direction of rotation that the shaft turns. Example, the Hyd Pump on the JD6600 combine. Whack the pump shaft in the same direction of shaft rotation to loosen.

The driving section (part) will be opposite the direction of shaft rotation to unscrew.

Try it with a bolt and nut.
