Should sealer be used on the shims that adjust the gear lash between the steering worm gear and the gear in the power steering unit? This happens to be on a 520. Mine is leaking around the shim. I used an old shim, but will replace with a new one(s).

Gee willikers, think about it. Did the 'source' of the product use 'sealer'. Give your head a "SHAKE". --more than one -yipes.

I took it to mean the shims between the worm and the spindle gear to set backlash. Only paper shims there...

Now, for worm bearing pre-load or freeplay, then that cap has an o-ring.

Yes the sealer on the shims add a little thickness. I figure that in. Better than a leak later.

Thanks. It is the paper shim that is leaking, not the cap.

the o ring keeps the oil from getting to the shims

Kent,

I appreciate your trying to give me a straight answer. I have the manual and have studied the parts diagram. I do not see how the O-ring keeps the oil from getting to the shims. It seems like to me that the oil could come from both sides of the shims. I am talking about the shims between the steering worm housing and the pedestal.

The paper shims, yes? They used to have thick and thin ones, now only the thin ones are available. I use a VERY thin coating of Permatex Aviation on all shims. Just enough to seal them all together. Then a very thin coating on each housing.

And then they are all garbage the next time they are removed. They were not sealed together from the factory. There's your sign.

Thank you. Both thicknesses are still available from Deere. I ordered them today. I am not sure if they are paper or the harder material.

Sealer will add to the thickness of the shim.
