John Deere M starter removal

On a John Deere M, to remove the STARTER you must remove the battery box............My question is to remove the battery box do you need to remove the gas tank?

You should not have to remove the gas tank. There are two bolts in the bottom of tool box portion of the battery box. Also, there are three bolts on the back of the battery box that hold it to the instrument panel.

and with the tool box out, this is a wonderful time to chase the threads on those 5 holes that haven't seen the light of day for 50 years.

I had to replace the starter spring on my M last summer and I pulled the gas tank. Keep in mind I was tearing everything down to paint anyway but if I remember correctly there was a couple bolts in the bottom of the enclosed section of the battery box that would be practically impossible to get to without pulling the tank. If it comes down to it removing the tank is only 4 bolts and the fuel line.
